‘When I’m graduated or got a nice job, I will travel the world.’ We all know this one, don’t we?
Have you ever had a moment to think about the fact that time is more precious than money and before you know you got a proper job, a family to take care of and are not able to travel to the places you’ve always wanted to travel to anymore? How many people say: “I wish I had traveled more, I wish I saved up more money, I wish I waited with this or that.” We all know these words… But what if we don’t wait anymore and make our dreams come true?
My name is Jasmine Musicco and I would like to share the following thing with you.
I am 23 years old. I’m studying Tourism Management in Amsterdam and have been living on my own since the age of 18. And yes, I do pay everything myself, like many students in Amsterdam do, but still, my story is a bit different.
My biggest passion is traveling and I travel very often. But how is it possible for me to live on my own and travel that much, while I’m a student and basically don’t even have time to study and travel? Well, I will tell you exactly how it started.
I was born in Goa. What? Where?! Goa. Do you know where that is? Goa is a province in the Southwestern part of India, well known as the place of the hippies. And yes, as you can already guess, my parents are hippies.
My father, who is now 70 years old and rather travels the world on his bare feet, still does so and lives in Goa every six months. The other six months he lives in Italy, where he is originally from.
My mother, she is something else. She was 16 when she left Holland, traveled and lived around the world by herself and came back when she was 32, with two kids. She has lived in India, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Italy, Israel and Africa – she traveled from France to Africa (Ghana) through the Sahara, by car, and knew how to navigate by using stars. In total a journey of 16 years. 16 years full of joy, happiness, knowledge, but don’t forget also hard times, lessons, danger and broken hearts.
One day at a Psy-trance festival in Goa, between the colorful palm trees and dancing hippies, my parents bumped into each other and fell in love. They decided to travel the world together and sell jewelry at festival markets to pay their ticket to their next destination. One day they moved to Holland where they got their first child, my brother.
As they didn’t belong in a Western country like Holland, they flew back to Italy and India to continue their preferred life.
Once back in Goa, a happy curly kid Jasmine was born under the full moon on the 6th of February 1995 – the same date as her parents’ biggest idol, Bob Marley.
I was raised in India and Italy (half a year in each country) till the age of 4. Since I was a child I’ve been traveling all around the world with my brother and parents, to the most beautiful and poor countries. But one day everything changed.
One day my mom realized that the hippie lifestyle wouldn’t bring us kids at a certain point where she actually wanted us to be later. It was the Western part of her soul that spoke. ‘At least she learned something in the West’, were her words. And so she decided to go back to her home base Holland, but this time with just the 3 of us. Bye dreams, I’ll never see you again. Well, that’s what I thought.
As some of you might know, I travel a lot and get the same question every day: how do you do that? How do you do that financially? How do you do that with your boyfriend? How do you do that with time? But I still have never answered these questions.
Tomorrow a new door will open for me and I will start a whole new life. I will go abroad and head to South-America. Yes! Finally! I will temporarily let go of the Western me and go back to my inner self, the hippie kid. I will leave my loved ones and many more things behind and take big risks. This adventure will not just be an adventure. I want to take you guys with me and share my experiences. I would love to teach you everything about how it is possible to travel that much as a student and how to do that all by yourself. I will show you guys how I will be going through life on a budget and discover the most beautiful and unique places. Budget or no budget, I will discover the world, and the most important thing: I will discover myself. It’s my time now. Just me and the world in front of me. It’s time to open up and face the world and turn my dreams into reality, cause life is not a fairytale.
I want to make this world a better place and make people more conscious of what else is out there, rather than just the Western world where it’s only about money, materials and appearance. People need to see how beautiful life can be, no matter where you’re coming from. Cause no, I’m not rich, and yes I’ve got hippie parents and changed from a free traveler to a Western girl. A hippie yet Western girl who was stuck in this hard world where she never felt at home.
